Made with Walljar — a note on our sister brand

Lilly Lights grew out of Walljar, our sister brand and the print studio we have been running for more than a decade. Walljar taught us how to think about colour honestly — how a pigment behaves on cotton canvas versus a textile weave, how to keep a black truly black, and how to make sure a print that looks right on a screen also looks right on a wall.

When we started developing backlit frames, all of that knowledge came with us. Backlighting is unforgiving. Any imperfection in a print — a slightly off white, a shadow in a gradient, a colour that reads well in reflected light but glows wrong when lit from behind — becomes obvious the moment the LEDs come on.

So every Walljar design is retuned specifically for Lilly Lights. Densities are adjusted so that darker areas still hold detail when illuminated. Contrast is rebalanced. Whites are calibrated so that they warm rather than glare when the light passes through them. It is the same image, but treated as a piece of glass rather than a piece of paper.

The tuning happens here in Rotterdam, on the same frames that ship to customers. Nothing is signed off on a screen. Every print is proofed in the actual light it will live in.
